Meet Our Mentor: Mat Pfeffer

JAN 26th– We were proud to interview MedTechVet Foundational Program Mentor, Mat Pfeffer. Mat the Director of Image Guided Therapy Devices at Philips.

“It’s important to have pride in your job. Obviously, nothing will top the pride of serving in the U.S. Marine Corps for 22 years, so when it came time to retire from the military and pursue my next venture, I knew it would be important to have pride in my job, my company, and my industry. The MedTech and life science industry certainly provides that atmosphere.”

What led you to become a mentor for MedTechVets? 

While preparing for my USMC retirement in 2018, I was also preparing for my transition into a (yet to be determined) future career.  It was a scary and exciting time.  I took my transition very seriously.  I took advantage of all veteran assistance programs (mentoring, networking, etc) and I learned a lot from fellow veterans.  They were key to my success, so I felt it was important to provide the same support to future veterans.  

What has your mentorship journey with MedTechVets been like? 

I’ve had two assigned mentees and a long list of “unassigned” mentees that were introduced to me at networking events and then connected with me for transition Q&A sessions.  Regardless of how I’m paired with veterans, I’m always willing to provide guidance and answer questions.   

“Take your transition seriously.  Yes, most companies will be “veteran friendly” and might even have veteran hiring programs, but you still need to put in the work to make yourself just as hirable as someone that has years more experience in the industry.  Take it seriously and you’ll be glad you did!”

Any advice for veterans?

What are your key takeaways from being a mentor?

All mentors emphasize the importance of removing military language from resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and elevator pitches, yet we continue to see it as the most common mistake veterans continue to make.  Not a problem.  That’s why we’re here!  We’ll help guide you through the transition…..starting with translating your resume into civilian terms!
