MedTechVets Spring 2022 Networking Conference

Written by Korinne Osterhoudt

JUNE 9– On May 24th, MedTechVets held its Spring Networking Conference to mark the end of another successful Academy. This year, we were joined by 46 individuals, all with the same goal–building a bridge to help military veterans successfully transition to meaningful civilian careers.

Everyone brings an interesting story and perspective of their company. It’s very humbling to know I can break into this industry by hearing all the inspiring stories

-Brian Marzan, Spring 2022 fellow

Companies in attendance included: Teleflex, Quality Lean Solutions, Edwards, LeMaitre, PPD, Stryker, Abiomed, Randstad LifeSciences, KinFizz, ResMed, NeoGenomics, ISA, B Braun, Philips, PrepMD, Jack Saladow & Associates, Intuitive, Conformis, and Vernay.

Inside the Conference!

Our virtual networking conference is an opportunity for our graduating Veteran fellows and Academy Alumni to interact and network exclusively with our corporate sponsors, community partners, and industry representatives from leading Med Tech, Bio Tech, Pharma, and Life Science companies. We were delighted to be joined by Maryann Terrone, HR Business Partner at B Braun. This was her 6th Networking event and we are beyond grateful for her continued partnership with our program.

“Find an internal champion who will personally deliver your resume to the hiring manager and advocate for you. This allows you to skip much of the protocol.”

Throughout our conference, those in attendance were given the opportunity to separate into semi-private breakout rooms to tailor targeted conversations. These smaller sessions give our fellows a great platform to utilize the skills and techniques they learned throughout our 6-Week Academy to market themselves effectively to find career success. In one of these breakout sessions, John Birkle, the Regional Manager at Teleflex, offered to personally make introductions for our fellows within Teleflex. In addition, he offered to extend his own personal network as well.

“Don’t be afraid to apply for jobs if you don’t meet all the requirements. Remember, no one checks all the boxes; showcase the boxes that you do check and have stories for each.”

Why is MedTechVets Academy important?

MedTechVets understands that translating our veterans military skills and accomplishments to a resume for a biotech company is not easy, lending to the disparaging number of unemployed veterans. We use our networking conferences as an opportunity to educate hiring managers, headhunters, and industry representatives on why hiring veterans increases the success and productivity of their company.

“Ask a lot of questions; show up with curiosity and humility.  Remember, everyone has been “new” before.”

Thank you to everyone who attended our Spring 2022 Networking Conference and to our 2021 Company Sponsors who made it possible. We’re excited to kick off another Summer Academy with a new cohort of Veteran fellows. With each new Academy and Conference we are able to make connections, open employment pathways, spread our mission, and support our veterans!

About MedTechVets

MedTechVets is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Veterans during career transition and beyond.

Our Vision is to build a bridge to help Veterans find meaningful employment in the Medical Technology Industry.

We bridge the gap for Veterans by providing personalized career transition services, mentorship, and career development guidance. We serve Veterans who plan to enter the MedTech, Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical, or Medical Device industries.

MedTechVets is proud to be endorsed by Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed).

When a Veteran’s military skills and experiences are translated to civilian language, recruiting managers see the benefits of hiring a qualified Veteran. Veterans are able to see the roles within the MedTech, Medical Device, Life Sciences, and Pharmaceutical industries that would best suit their skill set and career aspirations.

MedTechVets Academy is a specialized program that provides more than generic advice about transitioning into medical-related career fields.
