MAR 18th– We were proud to interview MedTechVet Program Mentor, Bryan Wayman. Bryan is the Director of Project Management at Emergent Biosolutions.
What led you to obtain a role within the MedTech space?
I became interested in medical devices after having knee surgery to reconstruct my anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). I was a senior in high school at the time and was interested in engineering, but wasn’t sure if what engineering discipline to choose for a major. After the surgery, I saw bone screws in the follow-up X–rays and it sparked my curiosity in the medical device field. From there, I went on to conduct undergraduate research in biomechanics and have been involved in the field ever since.
What led you to become a mentor for MedTechVets?
Through a conversation with a colleague that was familiar with the organization. He encouraged me to volunteer given that my work aligns so well with the mission of MedTechVets.
What has your mentorship journey with MedTechVets been like?
My MedTechVets journey has been awesome. I’ve learned so much from my interactions with the veterans that have been a part of the program. In my experience, all of the veterans have been well prepared, inquisitive and focused on achieving their career goals. Frankly, this has made my job as a mentor quite easy. But we always have engaging discussions where we exchange experiences and explore career options and networking opportunities within the MedTech space.
Any advice for veterans?
For veterans, your military experience brings tremendous value in the MedTech industry. There are many roles and organizations that would be great fits for your post-military career. Thinking broadly about your transferable skills. Take advantage of the offerings of organizations like MedTechVets to increase your exposure and networking within the MedTech space.
What are your key takeaways from being a mentor?
My key takeaways have been that:
- With the experiences that veterans bring to the work place, it is never too late to transition to a career in the MedTech space
- I can learn as much from the vets as they learn from me.
What does the future look like for you? Do you have any exciting trips planned?
The future is very exciting. Professionally, I’m looking forward to launching the autoinjector program that I’m leading. I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing my work impact lives, so launching this program is very important to me.
Personally, I’m looking forward to enjoying the summer and an upcoming trip to Jamaica with family.
